Melbourne has gone and one upped Sydney, will be home to a wave pool twice the size of the MCG

Yeah Sydney has some of the nicest beaches in the world at our feet, so there really is no reason to complain. But it feels as though Melbourne may be about to trump us, set to be home to a new wave pool that is twice the size of Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Wave Pool

Hosting a wave pool that is twice the size of the MCG, there are sure to be a few jealous wave fanatics around the country.

As reported by the Herald Sun, Western Australian company Wave Park Group have secured a spot for the pool at Airport Drive in Tullamarine, with construction estimated to cost a whopping $18.5 million. The man-made waves will allow surfers, body boarders and body surfers to drop onto waves the same they would at a beach, with the rides expected to last longer than those at Victorian beaches.

The company’s chairman Andrew Ross explained the diversity the pool has to offer, saying “The beauty of the Wavegarden technology is that it can accommodate in separate zones the needs of all surfers, from the smallest groms, and those starting out, through to the high performance training requirements of elite surfing athletes”.

To make all non-Melbourians even more jealous, aside from having the sweetest wave pool’s in the country, the park will also include a rock climbing wall, mountain bike trail and a parkour course. Construction is expected to begin next year, with the park set to open some time before 2018.
