What were you doing on Monday? Pornhub reported that their traffic surged by 10.5 percent during Facebook’s major outage.
Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger all experienced a 5-hour long outage, prompting users to take some time out and get a grip…literally.
Pornhub reportedly experienced a 10.5 percent surge in viewing traffic throughout the 5-hour period.
Although servers were down, other things certainly were not…
The 10.5 percent increase equates to approximately half a million additional viewers during each hour of outage.
This occurrence really does highlight our reliance on social media.
As humans, the need to satisfy our desires will always be a priority. When stripped of our ability to engage in social media, isn’t it only natural we switch on in other ways?

You could read an 80,000-word novel, slow cook a hearty beef stew, complete a full day of school subjects, teach yourself how to juggle like a pro, watch one third of the Netflix series You, complete a first aid course (and print the certificate) or run a marathon 30 minutes faster than Katie Holmes!
Although not commenting on people’s use of “Facebook free” time, the company has spoken out saying the cause was not malicious but rather an “error of our own making”.
“A command was issued with the intention to assess the availably of global backbone capacity, which unintentionally took down all the connections in our backbone network, effectively disconnecting Facebook data centres globally”
In other words. Someone is in big trouble.

Santosh Janardhan, vice president of Facebook’s infrastructure, said the reboot had to be done slowly “to avoid any further issues”.
“Every failure like this is an opportunity to learn and get better, and there’s plenty for us to learn from this one”.
It goes without saying that Facebook is probably not the only one who learned a little bit about themselves this week.
