In a bidding war inspired by the new season of Rick & Morty, a two litre bottle of the famous McDonalds Szechuan Sauce has been sold for almost $20k.
The bottle was sold by a fan of the show and writer Robert Workman, who was gifted a bottle of the condiment alongside the show’s writers. In an effort to support charities for gamers and pay off some debts, Workman put the bottle up on eBay.
Attracting the attention of 111 bidders including deadmau5, the bottle was finally sold for close to $20,000.
According to Pedestrian, 10% of the proceeds from the sale of the will be going to Extra Life, a fundraising initiative for gamers which raises money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.
The relevance of the bottle goes back to a promotional release of the sauce in the name of the 1998 film Mulan. The sauce then featured on one of the most recent episodes of Rick & Morty, riggering the eBay sale.
Workman commented on the sale, stating “I hold McDonald’s and Chef Mike [Haracz] in the highest respect. I really do. Mike has done an amazing job bringing this back for some lucky people to enjoy and I will do everything in my power to assure that it’s in the hands of someone that will truly enjoy it with a party of people, instead of just letting it rot away on a shelf for all to see.
The point of this sauce is for people to enjoy it – not necessarily me, but whoever ends up with it. No matter what amount it ends up at, I hope it ends up in the hands of someone that will thoroughly enjoy it.”
