Single Premiere: Wolf Colony – Paradise

Have you ever had one of those moments when you feel elated with joy yet incredibly down in the dumps at the same time? Being a human is a complex thing. It’s not like when you were a kid and you could assign a primary colour to how you’re feeling at the time. As we accumulate experiences and gain a deeper, more profound idea of the world we live in there are so many more shades of colour to deal with. Most music we encounter is structured around one emotion, but there are some that take on a bit more, and Paradise from Wolf Colony does just that.

Wolf Colony

Feel like dancing by yourself? Wolf Colony has you covered with emotionally complex new track Paradise. His knack for stellar songwriting is more apparent then ever.

Wolf Colony is a singer-songwriter hailing from the Big Apple who has been working professionally since 2012. I’d tell you his name, but he has remained anonymous and takes to wearing a cute little wolf mask to conceal his identity. Maybe his parents were gunned down in Crime Alley and since then he has dedicated his life to fight injustices with music as Wolf Colony. Or maybe that’s his actual name.

Old mate Wolfie has a knack for producing some gorgeous tracks, and Paradise is a great example of that skill. If one were to allocate an emotion to this track it would be ‘Happy-Sad’. The opening keys are overflowing with life and wonder, yet those beats are so plodding and down. If there was ever a moment when you wanted to dance by yourself on a big empty dance floor then this is the song to do it to.

Something that can make or break a song, particularly in the realm of electronic music, is monotony. Some people like it, but a song that has the guts to be a little dynamic and have several different hooks is something you know is worth your time. A synth part that has clearly been snapped up from the late 90s house scene sneaks its way onto the Paradise during the second verse and boy, that is a rewarding experience.

The vocals have a deep drawl to them as Wolf-Man sombrely croons over the track, the melancholy that spills forth is overwhelming. Yet there is but a hint of self-empowerment to be found; “There’s no need to be afraid of dreams. Embrace what you want” seemingly speaks a man who has experienced shitty times and simply resigns to the fact that what’s done is done, and you’re better off embracing the future.
