Sufjan Stevens, Jonny Greenwood and Mary J Blige make history with their first Oscar nominations

The 2018 Oscar noms landed today. Amongst the domination of The Shape of Water and Get Out in the lists, a few of our favourite artists wormed their way into the Best Music (Original Score) and Best Music (Original Song) categories.

Sufjan Stevens, Mary J Blige and Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood all scored nominations this year, each one of them making history in their own significant little way.

Mary J Blige, Jonny Greenwood and Sufjan Stevens have all scored nominations in the 2018 Academy Awards, but they’re against for some hot competition.

Greenwood is nominated for Best Original Score for his work on Phantom Thread. He’s facing Hanz Zimmer (Dunkirk), Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water), John Williams (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and Carter Burwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).

As a side note, Williams’ nomination sees him continue to reign as the most Oscar-nominated person alive.

Both Mary J Blige and Sufjan Stevens are nominated in the Best Original Song category, Blige for Mighty River from Mudbound and Stevens for Mystery of Love from Call Me By Your Name.

It’s the first time any of these artists have been nominated for an Academy Award. Significantly, Greenwood has composed music for a number of Oscar winning and Oscar nominated films (There Will Be BloodThe Master), but never had the honour himself.

Mary J Blige’s nomination rings especially loud, as she has become the first person to ever be nominated in the music and acting categories in a single year. She’s nominated for the Best Supporting Actress award, also for her role in Mudbound.
