Jonathan Kent, DC’s new Superman, Jon Kent, will be coming out as bisexual in the November issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El.
Presently dubbed the ‘Superman of Earth’, Jonathan ‘Jon’ Kent (son of the original Superman Clark Kent and Lois Lane) will be coming out as bisexual during next month’s issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El. This bombshell was dropped by DC Comics on Monday, which just so happened to be National Coming Out Day.
Additionally, longtime fans would be tickled to know that Jon Kent’s love interest is Jay Nakamura, a reporter. Like father, like son, huh. According to a press release, the story will unfold in the main continuity of the DC Multiverse, and in the issue, a burnt-out Superman will seek comfort in Jay’s arms. Carrying the fate of the world on your shoulders is no easy task, but the burden is lighter with someone else by your side.
Having the successor of Superman come out as bisexual sends a profound message to the comic’s audience, and shows just how far LGBTQ representation in comic books has come.
“I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea,” Superman: Son of Kal-El’s writer Tom Taylor says.
“Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.”
Other notable LGBTQ characters in the DC series include Tim Drake, better known as Batman’s loyal sidekick Robin, Batwoman, and of course, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.
