The first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word ‘swirls’ is soft serve cones, rainbow swirl lollipops, pretty much anything sweet with a swirly pattern. So when you tell me there’s a group called SWRLS (phonetically swirls) I naturally have high expectations of a sweet sounding band.
Although they are delectable in every way, they also have a very sexy and sinister quality about them; sweet and salty, the perfect combination. All I can say is that they live up to their name, because I had a swirly experience when I tripped out on their hypnotic dance vibe.*
Did someone say all-Australian indie dance supergroup? SWRLS make songs with one part sinister, two parts sugar and three parts sex.
SWRLS is an alternative, indie and dance collaboration from Sydney consisting of vocalist and guitarist Thom Moore (Mercy Arms), producer Richard Moore (Irrelevant Celebrities), and drummer James Watroba (The Dirty Secrets, Calerway).
A couple of weeks ago the boys released their debut single Definition, followed by the track Choice. These tunes promise to delight your senses by delivering a rich and captivating sound, which explores various genres of electronic dance music.
Now how can we define Definition ? The cool, low and sexy voice of lead singer Thom, combined with lively and rhythmic guitars and warped synths, captures you into a cautionary tale about pursuing your desires. The heartbeat of the song, which is the pulsating percussion, brews up that sense of guilty pleasure.
Perhaps it is a SWRLS signature to throw in a musical surprise in an already complete and pleasant package. You can expect to indulge in a splash of saxophone in Definition. In Choice, the sound of bongos will immediately set you up for a more relaxed and opulent dance feel.
SWRLS debut EP featuring Definition is to be released later this year. They will also be touring in June with details soon to be announced.
