After the demise of Sydney’s beloved Newtown Social Club back in April, news that the Landsdowne was being ressurected was a goddamn blessing. With the dudes behind Mary’s, Jake Smyth and Kenny Graham, at the helm, the venue made its grand return last night, and it was definitely one to remember.
The Lansdowne back with a vengeance? Yeah, we think so.
The revived venue sold out its grand reopening with promises of a supergroup featuring members of Sticky Fingers, The Delta Riggs, The Preatures and more. And they absolutely delivered.
The supergroup, playing under the moniker A Band (in tribute the The Band) took to the stage alongside a slew of local heroes like Hayley Mary from The Jezabels, The Rubens’ Sam Margin, Rowan Dix from Joyride, Jonny Took from DMA’s and Shogun from Royal Headache.
Before the show, the new venue owners took to Instagram with the message “SOLD OUT!!! Playing the music through the rest of the pub!!!! WE LOVE YOU SYDNEY!!!!! Come get some!!!”
I think it’s safe to say that Smyth and Graham’s assertion that the Lansdowne would be back “with a fucking vengeance” was well and truly justified.
The venue have a whole weekend of celebrations booked, with the Delta Riggs playing tonight and Double J’s 90s party on tomorrow.
The next few weeks are jam-packed too, with the likes of Gold Glass, The Hard-Ons, Fazerdaze and the Babe Rainbow set to break in the new stage. See more info here.
