In a tweet celebrating Pride month, everyone’s favourite childhood channel Nickelodeon has hinted that Spongebob is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Posted alongside images of transgender actor Michael D. Cohen and Korra from Avatar, who identifies as Queer, it is heavily implied that the sponge from bikini bottom is also LGBTQ+ identifying.
It’s no surprise at all that the announcement broke the internet, with fans all across the world chiming in on the news.

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Our latest LGBTQ+ icon. Nickelodeon announces that our favourite character is a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
“Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month,” the studio tweeted out over the weekend. As the news was only implied, fans are storming twitter in an attempt to figure out exactly how our favourite sponge identifies.
“Spongebob is gay,” has been trending since Nickelodeon’s tweet, with fans referencing some key scenes in the show which may have pointed to his sexuality.

In the last few weeks, Nickelodeon have been doing their part to give back to the community. In addition to this announcement, the studio aired a stirring tribute in wake of George Floyd’s murder. A black screen was broadcast for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, alongside the sound of heavy breathing and the words “I can’t breathe.”
