Third Man Records to release archival Johnny Cash live album

A previously unreleased Johnny Cash live album is set for release through Jack White’s Third Man Records. A Night To Remember stands the test of time, as the title of the album suggests. The audio recordings were taken from Cash’s Ahmanson Theatre 1973 performance in Los Angeles.

The Johnny Cash live show includes cameo appearances from his wife June Carter Cash, Larry Gatlin, and fellow Sun Records artist, Carl Perkins.

The double live album has been taken from the archives of Johnny Cash’s 1973 performance at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles.

The Johnny Cash live album will be released on double vinyl as a 2xLP set and pressed at the Third Man Records pressing plant in Detroit. It will be released as part of Third Man Records’ Vault Subscription series, an ongoing package that gives subscribers access to limited-edition novelties and releases.

Taken from Cash’s gig on May 5th, 1973, the live album has been titled A Night To Remember after the Ahmanson Theatre featured a 7-day string of consecutive performances from artists that were signed to Columbia Records at the time.

The performance period became known as the “Week To Remember” as the venue boasted major artists such as Miles Davis, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Staple Singers and Bruce Springsteen.

The organisational mastermind behind the stellar lineup of shows was Clive Davis and he managed to capture the night of Johnny Cash’s theatrical appearance on film. The Third Man release includes a DVD, with Cash in his element almost fifty years back in 1973.

“The high-quality, multi-camera shoot is gorgeous and immediately transports the viewer back forty-plus years and this previously unseen moment of Cash in full command of his performance and a crowd just lapping it up,” Third Man writes.

The evening has been mixed down to high-quality audio for the archival release as a 2xLP set. The vault package also includes a series of Cash’s poems from Forever Words as a gold 7″ vinyl single, performed by Ruston Kelly and an unrevealed artist.

The deadline to subscribe to the package is July 31, so jump on the Third Man Records website for more info. Check out the full setlist for A Night To Remember that captures Johnny Cash’s 1973 live performance at Ahmanson Theatre.
