Not long ago we came across Mind In Bind, the ripper new EP from Trent Worley. Serving pub rock attitude backed up by powerful, cathartic lyrics and the odd joke, it’s been spinning in our heads ever since.
Now that the EP has had some time to sit, we took five with Trent to chat all about it.
Musical heroes and songwriting as catharsis: we caught up with Trent Worley to talk through his Mind In Bind EP.
HAPPY: Can you tell us about the time in your life when you were writing these songs?
TRENT: I was pretty mixed up emotionally at the time of writing these songs… I was not a happy boy and in a very dark place. I hit rock bottom after many years abusing substances and began working my way upward after deciding to change my situation and attitude. Songwriting gave me something to focus on outside of my troubles and an outlet for a long term relationship breaking up.
HAPPY: Is there one song on the EP you’re especially proud of?
TRENT: I’m proud of the EP in general, only as I recorded everything myself for the first time. If I have to pick one, Love Is Love because it took me into another territory I hadn’t explored before experimenting with synths, whereas before I’d use guitars to layer sounds.
HAPPY: There’s a big pub rock vibe to your tunes which we love. Who are some of your musical heroes?
TRENT: Ha, nice! Well I’ve spent a lot of time in pubs listening to rock n roll, so I guess it’s gonna ooze out here and there! Musical heroes vary for all sorts of reasons, mainly for their attitudes over their style of music… but John Lennon and Craig Nicholls are a couple who come to mind. Anyone who is strong enough to be vulnerable and wear their heart on their sleeve. Every member of The Travelling Wilburys are a musical hero to me!
HAPPY: Your songwriting is very frank, are there any issues you care deeply about which didn’t make it onto the EP?
TRENT: Of course! Mind In Bind was a snapshot of where my head was at in the winter of 2018. It’s completely introspective, which is something I don’t generally do, or like to do too much of. So, looking outside of my head there is plethora of issues I care deeply about, globally of course environmental issues and lack of leadership in politics come to mind.
HAPPY: What’s next in line for Trent Worley?
TRENT: I’ll be finishing my album Planting Seeds! I wrote the album in 2013. I recorded the tracks in the Adelaide Hills and recorded the vocals at Abbey Road Studios in London in 2017. So, I’m pumped to finish it and put it out!
Trent Worley’s EP Mind In Bind is out now.
