Dr G. Yunupingu, whose name and image has been withheld at the request of his family, has passed away aged 46.
His importance, put simply, cannot be understated.
Quite possibly the most recognised indigenous musician in history, Dr G. Yunupingu spent his life giving back to a community which so direly needed support.
Dr Yunupingu’s first album, titled after his own first name, went triple platinum in Australia and held massive acclaim overseas. Since then he has released Rrakala and The Gospel Album, taking home multiple ARIA awards and performing all over the world.
Blind from birth, Dr G. Yunupingu was raised in the Galiwin’ku community, a remote outpost on the coast of Arnhem Land on Elcho Island. This served as the heart of his G. Yunupingu Foundation, a charity dedicated to young people in Northern Territory.
