Velociraptor – Sneakers

If you search “Velociraptor Sneakers” with Google, your browser will be filled with results like this, this and this. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find something arguably more awesome than extinct reptiles and ballin’ footwear – a little single called Sneakers from Brisbane pop institution Velociraptor.

velociraptor the band

Brizzy buddies Velociraptor have just dropped Sneakers – the second single from their (legitimately) highly anticipated self titled debut.

I say that Velociraptor are an institution not only because they’ve been pumping out the jams since 09′ or because they and Jeremy Neale have come to define a part of the contemporary Fortitude Valley sound, but because their physical presence is more like an institution than a band. The entire faculty under which I studied at university had less people than are in Velociraptor at any one time. In fact, there are more members in Velociraptor than there are staff in the average NGO – they even manage to make King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard look a little thin around the waist.

But enough about the size of the band, and more about Sneakers. While I counted a few too many ‘Baby’s and ‘Honey’s to call it a pop masterpiece, it’s certainly a pop something. Not quite as catchy as Ramona, but certainly playing to the same strengths – tragic lyricism timed to a tee, some real sweet choral harmonies and a sense of pounding desperation throughout means that I might just have to physically purchase one of these Velociraptor albums. Like, with money.

The track is cut from their upcoming self titled debut which has been legitimately anticipated by fans of the 10-15 piece. To coincide, the band (probably not the whole band, mind you) are hitting the road to play venues from Fremantle to Coolangatta throughout late August/early September. Check below for a full set of dates with Sydney’s Bloods – note the number of social clubs on the list. Tickets available through all the usual outlets.
