How to watch the Harry Potter reunion special in Australia

Yep, it’s already been 20 years, and now we’re getting a Harry Potter reunion special. Here’s how to watch it in Australia.

Two whole decades on, Harry Potter remains a seminal piece of wonder and pop culture, especially for millennial’s and gen-xers. Now, the 20-year Harry Potter reunion special is set to be released on January 1st in Australia, the same day as the UK, and will be accessible on Binge.

If you’re reading from the US, it will be available to stream via HBO Max (which is also technically available in Australia, if you know a trick or two).

The very first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was released on November 29 in 2001 and has grossed $1.017 billion USD.

The franchise as a whole has made movie stars out of children, who actually managed to keep it together pretty well, and has influenced pop culture for generations.

So, what can we expect from Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts?

The special is set to reunite the majority of its main cast. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Helena Bonham Carter, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton, Tom Felton and Bonnie Felton are all confirmed to feature in HBO’s exciting new trip down memory lane.

Or is it memory alley if we’re talking all things witchcraft and wizardry?

The special will feature archival footage and interviews with the cast and is guaranteed to be an emotional journey for fans of the franchise. So that’s at least pretty much anyone born in the 90s.

Notably, HBO and Warner have decided not to interview J.K. Rowling for the special, though she will be included in the archival footage. This may be due to the fact that the writer has been causing quite a lot of controversy in the past few years and the producers decided to avoid the backlash. Guess they couldn’t cast a simple “reparo” spell on her rep.

The filmmakers David Heyman, Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell and David Yate will also make an appearance in the special, returning to bask in the glory that they created.

Where can we watch it?

If you haven’t already got yourself a Binge membership, now is the time. Just add it to the list of streaming services except this one is absolutely worth it.

Binge offers a basic membership for only $10 a month but, if you’re feeling extra thrifty after spending too much on gifts and booze this Christmas, they have a 14-day free trial.

That gives you plenty of time to watch the Harry Potter Anniversary Special AND find some TV show you’ve been told to watch a thousand times and finally get stuck in.
