13 Greenpeace activists arrested over Sydney Harbour Bridge protest

Early this morning Greenpeace led a protest for Government climate change action by abseiling from the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

NSW police said “a number of people” were on the bridge as part of the protest this morning. However only three activists were able to use cables to climb under the bridge to begin abseiling and unfolding their banners, all at 5.30am.

NSW police have arrested 13 people following an activist protest to demand the major political parties take more action and declare a “climate emergency”.

The police arrested 10 people prior to the final three who were still attached to the bridge at 9.30am, bringing the protest to a halt. Greenpeace Australia Pacific CEO said in a statement that “Australia is facing a climate emergency right now” and “burning coal is the number one cause of climate change in Australia – we’re here to say no more.

The Government have also had their input on this morning’s protest, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison saying that taking action on climate was “important”, but said protesters needed to be considerate of others. Labor leader Bill Shorten said he “did not approve“, saying that “I feel for the emergency officials who have put themselves on the line to get these people down“.
