Dick Diver – Waste The Alphabet

‘Dad thinks the new dd songs sound like yes.’ – @dick_diver

With that seal of approval and a whirlwind year of success, it’s hard not to be excited about the new tunes coming our way from Dick Diver. Contrary to popular belief*, Dick Diver is in fact a band from Melbourne and not a seedy Brazzers video. Despite the tongue-in-cheek name, this four-piece creates quality guitar pop music and has been praised for their witty one-liners amongst cultural references of Australia.

Dick Diver

Melbourne’s Dick Diver are back with Waste The Alphabet, the follow up to the critically lauded Calendar Days. These guys sure haven’t been dicking around.

Their second studio release Calendar Days was featured as one of the best albums of 2013 by heavyweights such as The Guardian, The Music and Faster Louder, and now all that’s left is to wait in anticipation of what will come next.

Waste The Alphabet is the first teaser of what we can expect from Dick Diver’s upcoming album Melbourne, Florida. The song ties in with what the four-piece is best known for: a bunch of jangly guitars and witty wordplay. Dick Diver sets the tone for the kind of arrogant, sassy persona featured, starting up with lyrics “When we make up, in your makeup, I start to laugh. I’m mister natural.” It’s these kind of snarky but clever comments that solidify the band’s light and bright approach to music. Although it also shows progression; the sound is more clarified than that of the two previous albums, but will easily please fans too.

Coupled with a breezy surf rock-inspired vibe and slight reverb, Waste The Alphabet is a perfect example of Australian indie rock that is just as much relevant to their home-grown audience, as it is with an international scene. Whilst they’ve already wrapped up their ‘Last headline show in Aus for a while,’ you can bet that the four-piece aren’t winding down just yet. Between recording in obscure locations (such as a farmhouse in the Dandenongs) and being helped out by some notable recorders (think Mikey Young of Total Control and Eddy Current of Suppression Ring), we can expect a crazy amount of work and quality in Melbourne, Florida.

Waste The Alphabet and many more tunes can be found on the upcoming Melbourne, Florida LP – set to be released March 2015.
