Today, we are sharing the love with 5 reasons why you should be paying attention to Adelaide’s favourite indie-rock band, ‘Broken Waves’. PSA: this is DEFINITELY not Broken Waves who are writing this ;)
Fun
If you have ever been to a Broken Waves show, you already know this is true. Getting to know all of the members more and more as their career progresses is quite entertaining. There is a stark contrast between their music and personality as a group which is quite humorous to witness, some locals are labelling the band as being simultaneously the coolest and lamest band that Adelaide has ever produced. This is evident on the bands Tik Tok page.
Freaky
The indie-rock band likes to keep things freaky in & out of the studio. Inside sources have informed us that working with Broken Waves in any way is a physical, mental and spiritual challenge; specifically recording sessions. Frontman Ben Lyons-Reid can be mistaken for quite the shy guy when caught off-guard, however he is known to get freaky (in the best possible way) when he’s ‘in the zone’. Although there is an aura of mystique surrounding their writing process, how can one band be so eccentric yet so tame at the time. This is a mystery that we cannot answer at this time but may reveal itself as they progress in their career. Our source has told us though that a tradition the band swears by is to listen to ‘Baby’ by Justin Bieber on repeat before every show or recording session.
Fashionable
Broken Waves state that fashion stretches beyond just clothing, you can be fashionable in every aspect of life. Personally, they do not represent this quote very well but I assume they know what they’re talking about; or at least have plans to do so soon ;)
Lead guitarist, Will Physentzou is fashionable in every sense of the word, that man has rizz. Amber Timms is also an honourable mention for someone who keeps it very cool when it comes to style. As a group they do have quite the stylish stage presence, this was evident when they walked out to their own grime remix of Star Wars’ Cantina Band at their most recent single launch.
Funky
As Kendrick Lamar once said, ‘The funk shall be within you’, Broken Waves took this to heart. Since their early releases the band has progressed to a more ‘funk’ driven focus whilst still keeping their indie roots. Their latest single ‘The Divide’ is the first track the group claims is what finally feels home for them now. It will be interesting to see how far they take this sound or how they can incorporate these funk elements in their own direction.
You can listen to ‘The Divide’ below:
Fabulous
Overall, this band is indubitably fabulous. Between the indie-funk grooves they create to their quirky yet charismatic personalities, what is there not to love? Of course you can’t have a reason for being fabulous without mentioning the Oetjen brothers, Declan and Heath. These guys are not only growing to be staple names in the local scene in SA with both being in multiple bands but both boys bring an atmosphere of talent and originality to Broken Waves. This group is definitely one to look out for as they are taking the Oz music scene by storm and are not planning on letting up anytime soon.
