If you’ve ever missed on tickets in the first four minutes of their sale, then this one’s for you. For years scalpers have been using computer programs known as ticket bots to quickly purchase huge chunks of ticket sales to major events, effectively ruining fans’ chances of grabbing a pass of their own.
Of course, this then leads to those tickets being marked up by as much as 400% and resold to the poor punters who are desperate enough to pay such a hefty sum to see their favourite band. Well if you’re in New York, you won’t have to keep worrying about such things.
New York has just shouted a resounding “fuck you” to scalpers in their city by upping the penalty for criminals using ticket bots for profit.
On Monday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed off on a bill that upgrades the criminal severity of the use of ticket bots to a class A misdemeanour, meaning that criminals caught employing these means will face massive fines and the strong possibility of jail time.
Basically what goes around, comes around. If you’re a shitty little scumbag profiteering off the disappointment of fans trying to see some live music, maybe you deserve to be in jail. Hopefully other states follow suit, as it’s no secret that scalping is still rampant in America and the rest of the world.
