Mmmm yes we seem to have another anonymous act on our hands, following on from our friend Slow Magic (introduced earlier this year). This anonymous stuff seems to be super fashionable at the moment, I don’t really care who they are though, as long as they keep making these sweet tunes.
It’s a mix of semi deep house and some super chill vocals, its got a lot of Banks about it too, which is working for me. Being produced by a duo out of Melbourne, Hoodlem are joining the string of success to come out of the hipster centre of the country recently with Chet Faker and Willow Beats being all the rage right now.
Anonymous duo Hoodlem let their music reveal their honest identity – chill and groovy electronica with a deep and mysterious soul beyond their musical youth.
Hoodlem have been around since about June last year, initially gaining attention for a remixed/ cover/Hoodlem-ized Justin Timberlake track (which is incredibly amazing) and to date have a grand total of 5 tracks available for listening. They have just released their new tracks for this year, Old Friend and IGOTU, which are both pretty impressive with their smooth beats and even smoother lyrics.
Old Friend has some mad interesting underlying percussion and layered electronic that you wouldn’t particularly expect to work together but absolutely does. They uniquely combine electronica however with super soulful lyrics, providing a depth that you normally don’t see with this kind of music. It makes it not only funky to groove to but also gives you that sing-a-long factor that is oh so important.
Hoodlem made their US debut in June this year and have been featured by Neon Gold Records, soon to be picked up I am thinking. They are also featured by Big Sound for 2014. Now I would greatly appreciate a lil trip to Sydney some time soon, you two.
Man oh man, I’m falling in love.
