A Dutch Uncle is a term for an individual who issues blunt, harsh, and severe comments and criticism to educate, encourage, or admonish someone. Therefore, a “Dutch Uncle” is a person who is rather the reverse of what is normally thought of as avuncular or uncle-like. I’m not making the connection with the bands music in the slightest so maybe they could drop Happy a line regarding the name at some point. Now, on to the music.
Nothing like their namesake, the boys from Dutch Uncles will fill you with joy and excitement. Check out their new song In n Out!
Like all feel good pop music, the band originates from the United Kingdom where they make happy tunes in a town called Marple. Kind of like a British version of The Postal Service, Dutch Uncle’s lead man Duncan Wallis has the voice of a man who knows how to sing for joy. The band comprise of Pete Broadhead on the guitar, Andy Proudfoot smashing the drums, Robin Richards strumming both bass and guitar, Daniel “Sped” Spedding on Guitar and previously mentioned, lead man, Duncan Wallis multitasking on lead vocals and the piano.
When I say that Dutch Uncles draw influence from Talking Heads that should be enough for anyone to like their style. When you include intricately filmed film clips, skilful piano playing and balloons, it gets even better. Their genre floats from the obvious indie rock to math pop, art rock and new ‘prog’.
Dutch Uncles started out early in 2008 when they were in college together. In early 2009 released their first debut album in Germany with Tapete Records. In 2010 a second album followed and in 2013, Out of Touch, In the Wild, was released on January 14. For fans, 2015 will bring them happiness in the form of a fourth album, O Shudder on the 23rd.
Their latest single, In n Out sounds similar to Metronomy circa The Bay and features a more subdued tone, partial to a potential break up tune for a playlist but yet canvasing an overall, upbeat vibe, synonymous to Dutch Uncles’s unique sound. This single is free to Dutch Uncle fans when they pre order O Shudder on CD, LP or DL.
