There’s renewed hope for Sydney’s nightlife. Popular live music venue Freda’s has just announced that it has been granted extending trading hours. The space will now be open until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays, and until 2am every other day, effective immediately.
Although Freda’s, as well as other venues in Redfern, Chippendale, Enmore and Foveaux St in Surry Hills have emerged as safer, more popular venues since lockout laws were implemented in Sydney’s CBD, the city’s nightlife has been in rapid decline in the past six months.
“We believe that safe, diverse, intelligent, and cultured spaces for like-minded people to connect and create are an essential part of a city’s heartbeat.”
Freda’s owner David Abram says he’s grateful for the grant to extend trading hours, and hopes it will signal the renewal of arts and culture in Sydney.
“We have seen Sydney’s nightlife go through a sad and painful decline over the last six years. However, this is an important turning point in Sydney reaching its immense potential as a late-night city,” Abram said.
“We are grateful that both City of Sydney, and [Liquor & Gaming NSW] have supported our application for extended trade, and we can further our commitment to showcasing the incredible arts, culture and music the city has to offer.”
