UPDATE: Showrunner Al Jean has confirmed Danny Elfman’s comments were not true. The Simpsons will live to fight another day.
The world’s longest running cartoon, The Simpsons, looks like it may finally be coming to an end. This is according to the show’s composer Danny Elfman, who recently told JOE that he believes next year will be the show’s last.
Elfman is the composer behind the iconic Simpsons theme tune. He has also scored a number of successful films including Edward Scissorhands, Mission: Impossible, Men In Black, and many others.
According to composer Danny Elfman, who wrote the iconic theme tune for The Simpsons, the much-loved TV show is coming to an end.
In a recent interview Elfman stated, “Well, from what I’ve heard, it is coming to an end. I don’t know for a fact, but I’ve heard that it will be in its last year.”
The Simpsons has run from 1989 to present, screening 670 episodes since its debut. Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart, Maggie, and countless other unforgettable characters have been in our lives longer than most millennials, and regardless of how fans may feel about the latest seasons, it will be a sad moment when their narratives wrap.
It’s a seemingly unlikely success story, one Elfman certainly didn’t expect. He went on to share:
“All I can say is that I’m so flabbergasted and amazed that it has lasted as long as it did. You have to realise, when I scored The Simpsons, I wrote this crazy piece of music, and I expected no one would hear it, because I really did not think the show had a chance in hell.”
“Really, I expected it would run for three episodes and get cancelled, and that would be that, because it was so weird at the time, and I just didn’t think it had a chance. So believe me, that is one of the truly big surprises in my life.”
Since 1989 The Simpsons have treated millions to a myriad of hilarious, wacky, and often quite beautiful moments. From the world-stopping Who Shot Mr. Burns? to the hilarious Marge vs. The Monorail to the tear-jerking And Maggie Makes Three, the show has become one of our time’s most prolific pop culture monoliths.
