You know that liberating feeling you get when you listen to ’70s soul? Tease Me from LADY KING rattles the same bone with a modern flair.
Sydney soul artist LADY KING is easy to love. Her honey-drip vocals and natural knack for melodies over silky instrumentation guarantee a breezy listening experience. Her collaborations range from Lime Cordiale to Joseph Liddy and the Skeleton Horse, leaving a trail of sweetness everywhere she roams.
Her latest offering was written during a rough break-up, but Lady King dances herself back to life instead of kicking her feet. Let’s explore the detailed instrumentation in the track, as well as the unfettered lyricism.
Opening with some cascading vocals, summery guitar, strings, and horns, LADY KING sets up a warm atmosphere. Cute keys span the verse, while frisky lyrics reinforce the sultry soundscape; “When I’m near you, I just can’t help but lose control”.
Bongos creep their way into the chorus, diversifying the already rich instrumentation. Another musical highlight is the raunchy bass lick, which eventually stacks onto a bluesy electric guitar solo and triumphant brass punches.

“I spent some time listening to disco, ’70s funk, soul, and dance records like Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, Raphael Saadiq, Luther Vandross. Before I knew it, I was dancing again eventually Tease Me was born”, comments KING on the single. We’re dancing too.
Be sure to catch LADY KING performing at Oxford Art Gallery Bar on 2nd July. Deets here. In the meantime, listen to Tease Me below:
