Cracker Island, Gorillaz’ eighth studio album, may be their first No. 1 album since 2005’s Demon Days.
Cracker Island is a collection of ten energetic and powerful songs. Produced by Gorillaz, Remi Kabaka Jr. and Grammy award-winning producer Greg Kurstin, it features numerous collaborations with well known artists, including Thundercat and vocalist and long-time Gorillaz performer Adeleye Omotayo.
The virtual group, comprised of 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russell Hobbs, was formed in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. If successful, Cracker Island would be their second No. 1 album, their first since their second studio album Demon Days. Since its release it has reached 15323 sales, 13079 from physical copies, 1229 from streams and 945 from downloads.
Cracker Island‘s synth-led ‘80’s sound has been praised by numerous publications. The Rolling Stone described the album as “out of this world”, while the New York Times labelled ‘Cracker Island ft. Thundercat’ as a “blissed out groove”.
When it comes to topping the charts, Gorillaz’ main competition is Gracie Abrams’ album Good Riddance. The LA-born singer-songwriter’s highly anticipated debut album, described by The Rolling Stone as “one of 2023’s best debuts” is currently ranked at No. 2. At present, it has achieved 8344 sales, 7739 from physical copies, 563 from streams and 42 from downloads.
