APRA AMCOS are doing their part to combat the gender inequality that continues to plague the music industry by running a bunch of inner-city workshops designed to teach women and non-binary people the art of music production.
The workshops, titled Equalize, are being held in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and are available for members of APRA AMCOS. Led by experts in the field, the workshops tie in with International Women’s Day which this year falls on March 8.
In an attempt to bridge the gender gap in the music industry, APRA AMCOS are running workshops for women and non-binary peoples on the art of music production.
Workshop leaders include Studio 301’s Shelley Bishop, APRA Screen Music Award-winning composer and screen composers guild AGSC president Caitlin Yeo, mixer/engineer Antonia Gauci and electronic producer Mookhi. Screen composer Bryony Marks (Please Like Me, Barracuda), producer Jan Skubiszewski, art music composer and Ableton certified trainer Eve Klein, and Ninajirachi for Liveschool are also running workshops.
Said APRA AMCOS head of member services Jana Gibson of the initiative:
“Equalize has been designed to provide women and non-binary songwriters and composers with hands-on skills development in a professional studio setting alongside established music producers and creators.”
“The initiative aims to highlight music production as a viable career pathway for this underrepresented sector of our membership.”
Only 2.1% of the 871 credited producers on over 400 songs that made it onto Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart in 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2018 were women or non-binary, according to a recent report conducted by USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative.
