Melbourne/Naarm artist Bel has presented an unforgettable set in Metaverse: a massive festival that showcases live performance and an array of digital art forms.
Bel is an artist that approaches a variety of disciplines — including performance, production, and creative direction — with striking originality. Her set in the Metaverse (a festival hosted on the user-owned virtual world Decentraland platform), was an intoxicating blend of music and digital visual art — including garments, avatars, and augmented reality — courtesy of collaborator, Oscar Keene.
Described as “…the first event of its kind – a fully decentralized celebration of music that offers a weird and wonderful brew of world-class headline acts, mind-blowing stages, games, exclusive artist merch, collectibles and more,” Metaverse represents a bold new forum for music festivals, a sector that’s borne the brunt of the pandemic. Bel’s set in the festival (that hosted many queer and gender diverse artists) offers a window into an exciting new world of multidisciplinary performance.
This digital ‘Coachella’ obviously presents a vastly different experience to a real-world festival, but it also opens up new avenues of expression. In each of the four songs in Bel’s set, a totally unique atmosphere was evoked: other-worldly palatial scenes, industrial chambers, and natural environments.
Dripping with futuristic synth-pop vibes, Bel’s music offers space for contemplation but simultaneously hits hard with heavy bass lines and anthemic choruses. In other words: a perfect musical experience for a festival like this.
