Tucson’s pride, Calexico, is back for an anticipated stint in Australia and New Zealand. After an extensive 2023 tour across Europe and America commemorating the 20th anniversary of their seminal record Feast Of Wire, the band is set to head to Antipodean shores.

The Guardian aptly puts it, “Calexico are amazing live. Not only is their material extraordinarily good, but this is a band who clearly just dig playing…”

At the core, Joey Burns and John Convertino have crafted a unique blend of country, cinema noir, desert jazz, TexMex tango, Latin rhythms, and French chansons. Albums like The Black Light (1998) and Hot Rail (2000) set the stage, but it was Feast of Wire that catapulted them to musical stardom.

Reflecting on the album’s creation, Joey recounts, “I’m reminded of how much time and space we had in the studio to try out all sorts of ideas. Most of the recordings started like they often do with John on drums and myself on guitar. And as we brought in the other band members it was like a river was flooding through our subconsciousness and we couldn’t get the ideas to analog tape fast enough.”

Yet, Feast of Wire isn’t just about the music. Its a poignant story, that still resonates strongly today with narratives that dive into the lives of those struggling to cross the Mexican-American border to safety.
