New ‘Call of Duty’ anti-cheat system may already be compromised

Despite Activision’s introduction of new anti-cheat software Ricochet, it looks like Call of Duty: Vanguard  might still be plagued by cheaters.

Yesterday Activision announced that they would be using a new anti-cheat program, referred to as Ricochet, to help curb the numbers of cheaters on Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Warzone. It was welcome news for a community that have become increasingly frustrated with widespread cheating in online play.

Unfortunately, if a tweet by online community Anti-Cheat Police Department is to be believed, that positivity may be short lived.

Anti-Cheat Police Department showed evidence that the kernel driver for Ricochet had fallen into the hands of developers who were already working to reverse the anti-cheat program. If their attempts prove to be successful then Call of Duty: Vanguard players may find themselves in the same unfair battlefield on which they’ve grown accustomed.

Anti-Cheat Police Department appear to believe this outcome is an eventuality, and bemoaned that “it is easier being on the attacking side than the defending side in this field“.

Despite this, they did claim that anti-cheat programs can be successful and pointed to Valorant as a strong example of effective implementation. FACEIT and ESEA were also given plaudits for how well they work.

This setback is just the latest in a string of difficulties Activision has faced over the last few years – mostly to do with an online player base that has proven resilient to the publisher’s many attempts to clean it up.

As is usually the case, it appears to be a few bad apples ruining it for the majority; but due to the Call of Duty series’ popularity, that number of bad apples is significant.

Earlier this year Activision announced they had banned over 475, 000 Call of Duty: Warzone players. Although it appears that number will have to further increase before Call of Duty: Vanguard can truly be deemed an even playing field.
