The nominees for the 2019 WAM Awards have been unveiled, featuring a diverse cast of Western Australia’s brightest new musical talents.
Carla Geneve leads the nominations, receiving a nod in no less than eight categories. It’s been a stellar year for the Albany-based singer-songwriter, with her debut single Greg’s Discount Chemist taking out WAM Song Of The Year in July.
Albany singer-songwriter Carla Geneve has received a total of eight nominations (including Single of the Year and Best Rock Act).
Perth neo-soul songstress Jamilla is close behind with six nominations. Her hypnotic breakthrough single Bloom, which combines swelling synths and sax with textured R&B percussion (and a fantastic Nina Simone sample), has been nominated in two categories (including Best Music Video).
Among the other artists to receive multiple nominations include Demon Days, Sly Withers, Spacey Jane, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and Stella Donnelly, who attracted international acclaim for her full-length debut Beware of the Dogs.
WAM have also announced a new award for Artist of the Year, determined by a panel of music industry figures. WAM CEO, Mike Harris, says:
“It is important to continue to recognise the work of artists; this year WAM will present a best-of-the-best award from the genre award winners as the WA Artist of the Year.”
A full list of nominations can be found on the WAM website.
The 2019 WAM Awards will take place on October 31st at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Perth.
