Brisbane four piece The Creases have come a long way* in their short time on the music scene. After winning the chance to play at Laneway Festival this year thanks to Triple J Unearthed and supporting Jake Bugg on his recent tour, these indie rockin’ crooners have not only signed up to a worldwide record deal with Liberation, but are also set to play at Live It Up and the always spectacular Splendour In The Grass. Oh, and they’re also releasing a new EP which I’m pretty pumped about.
After winning over the hearts and minds of girls everywhere with their knee-weakening tune I Won’t Wait last year, The Creases have finally returned and are ready to set us swooning with a debut EP due mid this year, and the first taste is simply delectable.
Static Lines is everything you could possibly want and more. It’s deep, it’s broody, it’s magical – and there is just something about those vocals that sets my heart alight. Static Lines is beautifully composed – raspy voices mixed over lovely, space-like riffs and melodies that almost seem distant and otherworldly.
This is one of those special pieces of music that allow you to sit and pretend it’s being sung to you and you alone. The Creases have this way of mixing darling story telling with psychedelic instruments. They create a dream space, a static space, and everything just falls into place as you fall into the song.
The thing about this song though, that makes it so damn special, is how it feels effortless – as if it’s a soothing experience for the band to share this song with us all. The noise floats over you and cuddles you up. You get swept away with them as they build and create and yearn for such simple things that we all want. It’s all honesty and brutality and a very special kind of longing that everyone has felt.
Once again, The Creases have managed to deliver a showstopper. An all singing, all dancing, all performing masterpiece that will bury its way into your mind and refuse to leave. It’s beautiful in the most pure form, and I hope you all start lining up to buy that EP – due to be released ‘in the second half of 2014’.
