Future Islands endure a long distance relationship on new single ‘Say Goodbye’

Future Islands ready audiences for their hotly anticipated album with the evocative synth-pop single Say Goodbye.

Future Islands have shared the latest taste of their forthcoming album, a stirring new single titled Say Goodbye.

The track reflects on the toils of a long distance relationship, as punctuated by the crooning vocal performance of Future Islands’ bandmate Samuel T. Herring.

The singer is accompanied by shimmering synth-pop instrumentation, from the glitch of electronic keys to propulsive and electrifying percussion.

On the chorus, Future Islands belies the song’s sombre lyrics with infinitely danceable rhythms and the flair of an 80s disco pop cut. Later, the band incorporates theremin-like flourishes and whirring synths.

Lyrically, Say Goodbye sees Future Islands lament a long distance romance, as Herring pines about how “every day without you feels one closer to goodbye.”

“I just need to make this world seem right,” he pines with an effortless husk, “You just sleep tight, til I’m on your side.”

The single is accompanied by an official music video, which was directed by Jayla Smith and features stunning animations of underwater retreats and nighttime horizons.

Say Goodbye is lifted from the band’s forthcoming album, People Who Aren’t There Anymore, which is set for release on January 26, and serves as the follow-up to 2020’s As Long As You Are.

It joins the tracklist of the highly-anticipated album alongside previously released singles The Fight, Deep in the Night, King of Sweden, Peach and The Tower.

The project is said to trace Future Island as they look inward and unlock a new level of ferocity. People Who Aren’t There Anymore will be comprised of the band’s most inspiring and heartbreaking tracks.

After the release, Future Islands will embark on a string of shows across Europe throughout March and May. In anticipation of the album’s release later this month, you can listen to Future Island’s latest song Say Goodbye below.
