Bromance has brought the goods to the proverbial table umpteen times. Cast your mind back to that which went before. Most of the Coen bro films, Wes and Schwartz, Quentin and Owen, these chaps have served up delish offerings that have kept the tedium at bay. Joining this illustrious list of chummy collaborations are Happy faves and now international legends Hockey Dad, proving that when you love you best mate, you can make bloody good music.

So Tired

Proving that much goodness comes from the Gong and it’s time to give a puck, Hockey Dad own the game and deliver with new single So Tired.

And cue positive realisation time. Clawing our way out of the smog that lightly hangs over the metropolis we’ve set ourselves up in, remembering the breeze that lightly caressed our shining cheeks. Remembering the expanse of the sea in its lapping bliss. The latest offering from coastal residents Hockey Dad is sure to bring about the summer vibes now becoming a nostalgic wisp.

Hailing from the place of the rolling hills, where the sun shineth always and a hello isn’t met with “feck off”, Zach Stephenson and Billy Flemming, of the dads that hockey, have been immersing themselves in the cruisey environment that The Gong has to offer. This mixture of sun, sea and salt has been lauded to be the recipe of staving off death by stress and also, rather conducive to solid creativity. The Leisure Coast fellas know what’s good for them and it shows in their latest offering.

Irony upon irony is always quite the edifying journey and So Tired delivers in spades. Being neither a tired or fatigued song this track gets going right from the get go. Incredibly chipper drums get rhythmic and crisp, keen to lead the charge. A tambourine, yes, the instrument that is wielded to channel all of happiness and your primary school productions from and centre, dances around the peripheries, smiling all the while, making eyes at the drums.

Stephenson, bless that silky voice, croons above it all, weaving and delivering vocals that are the coast, cruising along it in a beat up ute and cramming down maccas your reality for a solid three minutes and thirty-eight seconds. Ample time to get the breathing back to normal at the baboon that has just cut you off in traffic.

The guitars in this track balance having an edge, driving melody and going along for the ride in confident, sweet, sweet equilibrium. They swell and retreat in cahoots with the development of the track. Merrily moulding with Stephenson’s smooth vocals one moment, claiming what’s theirs in tight focus the next. The grungy vibe throughout the song is well handled, sure we’ll toe the line but we’re still going to stick it to the man. This is prerogative yo, etc, etc.

Reconciling the fact that this song is exceptionally happy sounding, with a name that we usually utter in dismal abandon mid-way through our seventh tax return attempt, when your airways are closing up and show me the money has lost all meaning is your first port of call. Clambering lightly over that fence, we are then free to jut out our chin in contented bop, arms swinging as you remember the good times, the I-love-my-mate times, the I have a soul and it will soar times.

So Tired, the new track from Hockey Dad, take it right along with your vitamins. It’ll do the spirit, demeanour and hope quotas some good.
