David Byrne’s acclaimed Broadway show American Utopia is getting a film adaptation from Spike Lee, and its officially headed to HBO later this year.

“Spike and I have crossed paths many times over the years, obviously I’m a huge fan and now finally here was an opportunity for us to work together,” Byrne described in a statement.

“I am absolutely thrilled with the result. The Broadway show was a wonderful challenge as well as an opportunity – it was a joy to perform and, well, best to let the quotes speak for themselves. Thrilled that this show and the subjects it addresses will now reach a wider audience.”

American Utopia is an adaptation of Byrne’s 2018 album of the same name and includes material from the album, as well as songs from the Talking Heads catalogue – infused with an optimistic political and social commentary.

The original Broadway show ran from October 2019 to February 2020. The hugely popular show was then scheduled for a second run of performances, however, they were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The film is slated for release sometime later this year. In the meantime, check out Byrne’s American Utopia album or the Broadway cast recording.
