New music from Jonny Greenwood debuted on NPR’s Tiny Desk

Best known for his day job of being a guitar god in Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood has been steadily building a reputation as one the most sought after composers in the contemporary classical and film worlds.

Two of his new works have just been debuted on the NPR Tiny Desk series, performed by Ensemble Signal.

Jonny Greenwood has somehow combined being in Radiohead with his work for cinema and orchestra. Watch his new work perform at NPR’s Tiny Desk.

The concert consists of two halves. Three Miniatures from Water was born from a sketch for the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Largely based around the octatonic scale, the eerie melodic fragments go hand in hand with the hypnotic drone of the tanpura.

The second piece, 88, is a solo piano work, which takes inspiration from early 20th century composer, Olivier Messiaen, and heads toward a heavily percussive climax.
