Madlib and Freddie Gibbs share album release date and new single

Five years on from Madlib and Freddie Gibbs’ collaborative 2014 album Piñata, we finally have a release date for their next project titled Bandana, which will be out on June 28.

Speaking to Billboard, Gibbs says that nothing has changed when it comes to chemistry between the pair on Bandana, even after creating their previous record Piñata. “We still doing the same thing we was doing in the first album. Just having fun, trying new shit, taking risks.” Madlib adds that this is just a “continuation” into another chapter for the duo.

Madlib and Freddie Gibbs’ sophomore album Bandana will have features from Pusha-T, Killer Mike, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and Black Thought.

Gibbs also admits that he originally did not want any feature on the album, saying to Billboard “when I first started working on it when I came home I was like nah, I ain’t really feeling reaching out to people and going through the motions, so let me just do this thing and wrap it up, just make another classic, this time just do it all me.”

However, he adds I got to a point where I was hanging around people and I just couldn’t say no, it all worked, it was timing and everything in this game is about timing.”

There have been rumours circling Madlib’s collaboration work with the late Mac Miller and while they didn’t record an album together, it has been confirmed that they did record some first takes on tracks.

“If I get the permission I will put it out, but that’s up to his family.”

In 2018 Gibbs released two new projects, his solo mixtape titled Freddie and his Curren$y and Alchemist collab Fetti. Following Piñata, in 2015 Madlib released his collaboration album Bad Neighbor with M.E.D and Blu, and last year teased a work in progress record with Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey.

The pair have released a single off the album titled Crime Pays, which is an exciting taste of what’s set to be a mind-blowing mixtape from the duo. Check the video out below:
