Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announce the birth of daughter, Lilibet

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced the birth of their daughter, Lilibet.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s daughter is their second child together, making their first child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, a big brother.

Their daughter’s full name, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, pays tribute to Prince Harry’s mother (Princess Diana) and grandmother (Queen Elizabeth II).

According to The Sun, Lilibet “was The Queen’s family nickname and the name Prince Philip used to call her”.

According to the official statement made by the California-based couple (and released via the Archewell Foundation’s website), “Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA.”

“She weighed 7 lbs 11oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.”

The Duke and Duchess had this to say regarding their new bundle of joy: “On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”

The announcement of the newest addition to the royal family comes after an eventful year for one of the world’s most talked-about couples.

After dropping bombshell after bombshell during their infamous interview with Oprah earlier this year, the Duke and Duchess have been subjected to constant harassment from online trolls and the British tabloids.

Royal expert, Duncan Larcombe, says that, by naming their daughter after The Queen, Prince Harry and Meghan are effectively extending an “olive branch” to ease the tensions between them and the Royal family.

“This is very significant, there is no doubt that the choice of name for Harry and Meghan’s first daughter is the first significant, possibly the only olive branch that the Sussexes as a couple have offered to the British Royal Family since they left the country and walked away … So it is very significant in that respect,” says Larcombe when speaking to BBC News.

According to the ABC, “Lilibet is the Queen’s 11th great-grandchild and eighth in line to the British throne.”
