The more serious end of Nirvana’s fanbase will know the name Kirk Weddle as the photographer who shot the Nevermind cover image.
That little baby in the pool has become an iconic shot, but a lesser known tidbit of Nirvana info is that Weddle went on to shoot the band in the same style around a month after Nevermind went public.
The Nevermind shoot that almost never was: check out the rare photos of 1991 Nirvana unearthed by their original photographer Kirk Weddle.
On October 28 in 1991, Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic went for a dip in an Los Angeles pool while Weddle shot around 200 images, even convincing them to bring their instruments along for the ride.
“I remember Kurt was like, ‘Fuck! I have to get in the pool?’” Weddle recalled. “He was not a water guy at all.” This is probably why you Cobain is having a poolside nap in a couple of the shots.
On finding the images, Weddle was surprisingly blasé; “I’ve just kept them stacked in a closet, unorganised.”
They’ve since been made available for sale by Austin’s Modern Rocks Gallery. Check out a few below, and head to their website to grab yourself a print.
