Lil Nas X‘s hip-hop/country crossover hit Old Town Road has now been at number one on the US Hot 100 charts for thirteen weeks, making it the longest reigning hip hop track of all time.
The record was previously held by three tracks – Eminem‘s 2002 hit Lose Yourself, Black Eyed Peas‘ Boom Boom Pow, and Wiz Khalifa‘s See You Again.
Lil Nas X’s single Old Town Road has just overtaken Eminem’s Lose Yourself to become the longest-running number one hip-hop track on the US charts.
Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road, featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, leads the US Billboard Hot 100 for a 13th week, rewriting the record for the longest reign ever for a hip-hop hit. The track is also the 12th single in the Hot 100’s six-decade history to dominate for at least 13 weeks. “CRAZY DAY” Lil Nas X responded on Instagram, also sharing the news on Twitter.
It’s been a pretty hectic week for the rapper. Over the weekend at Glastonbury festival, he performed a show-stealing guest performance during Miley Cyrus‘ set, performing his chart-topping hit alongside Miley’s father Billy Ray.
Shortly after, on Sunday, Nas X came out as gay on the final day of pride month in a series of social media posts, directing fans to the lyrics of his track C7osure. “Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not gone fwm [fuck with me] no more,” he wrote on Twitter. “But before this month ends I want y’all to listen closely to ‘C7osure’.”
This sparked a whole lot of weird controversy and speculation that Old Town Road was about gay sex, the rapper quickly shut down the theories stating that “old town road is literally about horses.”
