Patti Smith announces new memoir Year of the Monkey

Punk visionary Patti Smith has announced that her profound new memoir Year of the Monkey is to be released on 24th September 2019.

Year of the Monkey provides an insightful account of America’s turbulent political landscape and her personal feelings on loss and ageing.

“I began writing it on New Year’s Day, 2016 in cafes, trains and strange motels by the sea, with no particular design, until page by page it became a book. It is Year of the Monkey,” Patti Smith writes on her Instagram.

The book documents Smith’s observations from her travels in the United States and spans one years time. Her publisher Penguin Random House describes it as a “haunting memoir (that) blends fact and fiction with poetic mastery.

Smith’s latest memoir will follow her 2010 New York Times Bestseller and National Book Award-winning Just Kids and 2015 memoir M Train.

Year of the Monkey will be accompanied by her original and artistically crafted polaroids.

The New York Times has described the memoir as “Terrifically evocative … Spellbinding and diverting.”

“The unexpected happens; grief and disillusionment. But as Patti Smith heads toward a new decade in her own life, she offers this balm to the reader: her wisdom, wit, gimlet eye, and above all, a rugged hope of a better world.”
