Foreign Architects are back with their new single Old Recipe, a politically charged single comprised of twangy Mac DeMarco-esque guitars, meaningful lyricism and perfect harmonies contributing to a charmingly vintage sound. It’s safe to say, the boys have done it again.
With a surprise ‘guest vocalist’ dubbed over the top of some mad maraca playing, the track features our one and only Prime Minister Scott Morrison. This contributes to Old Recipe’s success as much more than an indie-pop song, with a nuanced take on the issue of refugees in our country.
Foreign Architects’ new single Old Recipe is a politically charged take on the Australian government’s lack of humanity towards refugees.
Matt Burke, singer and vocalist from the band said:
“This was a song we wrote a little while ago and things started to heat up recently with the rhetoric in the media from the usual suspects about protecting our borders etc, it’s the same old lines that often get thrown out by politicians that want to sound tough to win votes, but its at the expense of real people’s lives.
“We thought fuck it, lets just put it out, we’re artists, we can have our say. As a piece of art we are proud to release this song in the current context as a snapshot of where we are as a society today”.
The Perth band has made quite a name for themselves since they began in 2013, releasing a number of singles and EP’s along the way, such as Coasters and Caravans in 2018.
Since starting out, the band has expanded to a fuller sound, with numerous family ties. Main members Matt Burke on vocals and guitar, his drummer cousin Andrew Barnett and guitarist Dylan Geiles are now joined by Geiles’ own cousin Aaron D’Vauz on bass for live shows.
Old Recipe is the latest in a string of consistently great releases from Foreign Architects, and judging by the quality of everything we’ve heard so far, I think we can safely expect plenty more great tunes. In the meantime, do yourself a favour and listen to the new single above.
