I recently sat down to revisit some of my favourite films and of course, Wes Anderson jumped into view. The palette landscapes and carefully curated settings all play to the simple pleasure in such a beautifully orchestrated fashion.
The latest clip from US band Holy Golden for their single Arrival is very much pointed in that direction.
Band members Leslie Schott and Andrew Valenti will take you on a journey across a windswept coastline. Disembarking a small and decorative rowboat, the pair galavant around the grassy dunes, sharing bread, long loving gazes and stories from classic novels.
Holy Golden inject a lighthearted humour and pantomime to their latest clip Arrival, balanced by the powerful and gripping musicianship behind it.
The scene then turns, seemingly bored of the romantic picnic they shared, the couple heading along the blustering shore to come upon a mystery map in a bottle. Following their newfound instructions, the pair are lead to a rocky outcrop, and proceed to make use of washed up shells to create beautiful ephemeral works of art on the sand.
The clip is tongue in cheek, the over acted and romanticised narrative adding a sense of childlike wonder and mystery.
The song itself is wonderful, if you’re a fan of First Aid Kit, Jack River or even The Jezabels then Holy Golden is for you. Don’t get distracted by the comedy and quick wit of their music video, because lying just underneath there is a truly pressing release at hand.
The shrill and yearning vocals of Schott hum cooly throughout, and while the track isn’t a crash hot banger, there is a sweet, warm energy about it. You’ll want to wrap yourself up in its arms over and over.
