With a string of consistently great albums, EPs, and singles under his belt, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Simon Imrei has spent the past number of years carving out a unique space for himself in the world of folk music. His songs feel simultaneously grounded and explorative; they’re rooted in folk, but reach far wider.
Now, with the release of his latest single Stand Still, Imrei continues to establish himself as one of Aussie music’s most interesting songwriters. It should go without saying that we’re stoked to be premiering it for you today.
On his incredible new single Stand Still, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Simon Imrei delivers a serene slice of folky brilliance.
Throughout the new single, Simon Imrei glides through a dream-like blend of folk, blues, pop, and indie-rock to craft a sound uniquely his own. With textured instrumental arrangements and endearingly warm vocal melodies, Stand Still is the kind of track that’ll stick with you for weeks.
The new single is about “heading down the coast with someone, living out of an old suitcase, and sharing the quiet in amongst the craziness of life’s day-to-day,” Imrei says. As he weaves this rich tapestry of sounds, he crafts a captivating sense of resolve.
Stillness is not just a concept Imrei explores lyrically, but also sonically. Although the track melds layers of sounds, it never sacrifices its peacefulness. By the time you reach the conclusion of the track’s four-minute duration, you’ll have been roped in completely by Simon Imrei’s soothing sounds.
Stand Still is Imrei’s first slice of new music since his two-part sophomore album The Sum of Scenes, and judging by the quality of everything we’ve heard so far, I think we can safely expect plenty more great tunes.
In the meantime, do yourself a favour and listen to the new single above.
