UK hip-hop duo Too Many T’s have certainly been making a name for themselves. They’ve made quite an impression on festival audiences, including, but not limited to, killer sets at Glastonbury, Shambala Festival, LeeFest and Camp Bestival, in addition to playing with genre legends Wu Tang Clan and Big Daddy Kane. Following the release of first single 1992 Pt. II, the two fellows behind Too Many T’s Leon Rhymes and Standaloft have accumulated their years of experience to craft a song with nods to Cyprus Hill, Smoking Goodies takes you back to the 1990s where the hip was raw and the laws were loose.
The slow beat drives the song forward, with plenty of scratching taking place that really gives the track that distinctive old school vibe. Sometimes scratching can end up being detrimental to a track if used poorly, but luckily that is not the case here. The scratching adds an outstanding amount of character to the piece. The whole affair is quite minimalist, which is good as it allows for the duo’s rapping to take centre stage.
The delivery of the verses is great, there is so much passion here it’s almost overwhelming. The quality found on this single bodes well for their upcoming Running Wild EP. In case the title didn’t tip you off, the majority of this track is about getting high. Regardless of your stance on such things, Smoking Goodies demonstrates the search for something to make one feel good and at peace. The second verse features some great imagery, “I wanna get higher, gonna jump in jet, gonna straddle the stratosphere. Yeah, it’s kinda nice up here. Shimmer in the galaxy is better than any gallery. Better than having mammaries”. Definitely worth a chuckle, because what’s hip-hop without a sense of humour?
