Sufjan Stevens has announced a new album, check out the first song

Sufjan Stevens has announced that he will be releasing a new album – this time a collaborative LP with his stepfather Lowell Brams.

The album is titled Aporia, and we won’t have to wait too long to hear it as it’s coming pretty damn soon – March 27.

Sufjan Stevens has just announced that he will be releasing a new collaborative album with his stepfather, Lowell Brams, and they’ve shared a mysterious first taste with The Unlimited.

The album will be coming out through Asthmatic Kitty, the label that Stevens and Brams founded together (totally the best label name ever). And in case you didn’t realise, Stevens’ stepfather, Lowell, is the same Lowell from Stevens’ celebrated 2015 album, Carrie & Lowell

Alongside the announcement, the pair have released the first song off the album, titled The Unlimited. The track is a slow-building, cinematic song which is completely instrumental. It’s also accompanied by a beautiful psychedelic video, which hints that Aporia will be a “new age album”. Intriguing stuff.

Perhaps Stevens drew some inspiration from the soundtrack, Planetarium, he wrote for an abandoned sci-fi film, back in 2017.

Speaking on the album in a press release, Steven described:

“You know how it is with jamming, ninety percent of it is absolutely horrible, but if you’re just lucky enough, ten percent is magic. I just kept pulling out these little magical moments.”

Apparently, Aporia was recorded over a period of a couple of years.

This is not the first time the pair have collaborated, with Stevens contributing to Brams’ experimental 2015 album, Music for Insomnia. The album also included collaborations with the National‘s Bryce Dessner, as well as Brams’ partner and Stevens’ mother – Carrie.

Aporia will be out on the 27th of March 2020.

In the meantime, we’ve included the first single, plus cover art, tracklisting, and a playlist made by Stevens of music that inspired the album, featuring Enya, Boards of Canada, and more.

In other news, last year Stevens penned a beautiful open letter in celebration of pride month.
