Sweetlipp’s Tutorial

Recording Kick Back was an incredible time, Sam allowed an entire day each to dial in our tones for each song which what we always wanted. Unfortunately we cant remember what kit ryder used but he always uses his own cymbals which include Zildjian hi hats (scimitars), Paiste dimensions crash, Byzance dry ride and his faithful ludwig supraphonic snare.

He initially layed down all the drums over demos we recorded at a friends place with exception of soldier which we done live in the studio. Hearing and seeing the takes ryder put down we knew he was on fire. After MD started laying down the bass with American fender jazz, all DI and pretty certain included a 1176 compressor in his chain.

The biggest difference with these recordings was that we embraced recording all the bass and guitar tracks DI. Sam has a boss wazacraft head that could simulate any amp and speaker set up.

For the whole recording Hayden used his fender 68 deluxe reverb reissue and bypassed the amp speakers into the wazacraft simulating any speaker he sort fit for each song, tommy doing the same with his laney amp.

We had brought an array of guitars to experiment with but evidently ended up using only the strats. Hayden has white Fender stratocastet with fender custom shop 69 pick ups and Tommy has a black fender strat with Seymour Duncan pick-ups with a humbucker in the bridge.

The boys pulled their pedal boards apart and combined each others to get the best tones possible. Key pedals to note for Tommy was the analogman red dot germanium fuzz, voodoo lab sparkle drive and fulltone deja vibe.

Some songs we used a Leslie speaker simulation on Tommy’s guitar which was absolutely perfect and gave it so much life. Key pedals for Hayden were his king of tone by analogman which was used on every track, vibe machine by drybell and re20 space echo by boss. All the reverb and tremolo was from the deluxe reverb amp which Hayden thinks is the best around.
