The heroic landmine finding rat, Magawa is dead at age 8

A rat named Magawa, who was responsible for detecting over 100 landmines and explosives in Cambodia, has passed away.

The clever African giant pouched rat, Magawa was dubbed the most successful landmine detecting rat for the non-profit APOPO a non-government organisation that trains rats to save lives by finding landmines and tuberculosis.

The HeroRAT’s passing was announced via an Instagram post, saying that Magawa was in good health and spent most of his last week playing.

Magawa was awarded the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals, Gold Medal, for his work in Cambodia in 2020 and recently celebrated his 8th birthday.

This sweet little lifesaver had also retired just last year after 4 incredible years working hard for APOPO.

“All of us at APOPO are feeling the loss of Magawa and we are grateful for the incredible work he’s done,” the nonprofit state on its Instagram post.

“During his career, Magawa found over 100 landmines and other explosives, making him APOPO’s most successful HeroRAT to date. His contribution allows communities in Cambodia to live, work, and play; without fear of losing life or limb.”
