The Mars Volta reunion is “happening”, says Cedric Bixler-Zavala

The Mars Volta’s last album was 2012’s Noctourniquet, and the band broke up shortly afterward in 2013 after founding members Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López had a falling out.

A year after the band broke up, Bixler-Zavala and Rodríguez-López started a new project called Antemasque; the pair also reunited their band At the Drive In for a new album in•ter a•li•a. Now, Bixler-Zavala has hinted that The Mars Volta could be reuniting soon.

Over the past month, Cedric Bixler-Zavala has hinted on Twitter that the reunion of The Mars Volta is very much on the cards.

It appears there’s a good chance that The Mars Volta may be making somewhat of a comeback, as Cedric Bixler-Zavala has hinted in multiple tweets that the pair have been working together again. On Saturday, in response to a fan who tweeted “I dream of you guys giving TMV a new chapter” Bixler-Zavala tweeted “It’s happening.”

In a follow-up tweet, Bixler-Zavala gave us a little more insight on the new project, stating that:

“What it’s NOT going to be is your ‘fav member lineup’ playing their ‘classic records’ in full etc. Maybe we’ll play old shit, who knows how we feel. Just remember our past campaigns never relied on playing requests or going fully backwards …it’s new shit, new people, left turns , tangent inconsistencies, mazapan dreams and churro wishes. I will say this though, when ORL played me a grip of new shit I fucking cried. Like Claire Daines in Romeo & Juliet cried. Yeah it was fucking weird. It’s in its infancy right now. No deadlines, no ball tripping, no drama, just 2 grown ass men using essential oils and bold new perfumes shooting ideas and scooting their ass across the fucking lawn trying to get rid of these worms.”

Although these posts seemingly confirmed many fans’ hopes of a TMV reunion, they are certainly not an official confirmation, and Bixler-Zavala has since deleted these posts, which raises suspicions that they may not be reuniting at all.

However, a recent post by Bixler-Zavala in response to another fan tweet neither confirmed or denied the reunion. The fan tweeted that they “saw some screenshots that are hyping me up too hard… TMV helped me out of a massive depression/suicide episode back in the day. if you guys get back together… that would make my life” to which Bixler-Zavala responded “Ambrazos!!!!!!!!” (meaning hugs).

We can’t be 100% sure that The Mars Volta are reuniting anytime soon, but there’s a solid chance that they will be.
