Indie rock enthusiasts, get ready to rejoice, as The National drops their latest single ‘Your Mind Is Not Your Friend’, featuring Phoebe Bridgers, ahead of their upcoming album First Two Pages of Frankenstein.
Indie rock giants, The National, have just dropped their final single, ‘Your Mind Is Not Your Friend’, featuring none other than the inimitable Phoebe Bridgers. The track is the fourth single to be released ahead of their upcoming album, First Two Pages Of Frankenstein, set for release on April 28th via 4ad / Remote Control.
The hauntingly beautiful track explores the entanglements of the habitual mind and the overwhelming nature of scrutiny, with frontman Matt Berninger crooning, “Your mind is not your friend again, it takes you by the hand and leaves you nowhere”. The song was born out of Berninger’s writer’s block and was partially inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein.
But it’s not just the song itself that’s worth raving about – the music video is equally mesmerizing. Directed by Jackson Bridgers, Phoebe’s brother, and starring Tom Berninger, Matt’s brother, the video is a nostalgic and wistful journey that perfectly complements the song’s introspective nature.
The National has always been a band that’s unafraid to tackle important issues, and with ‘Your Mind Is Not Your Friend’, they’re continuing that legacy. The band has pledged to make a donation to TinyChanges.org, a charity established in memory of Frightened Rabbit lead singer Scott Hutchinson, who was an advocate for mental health awareness.
Since the release of their first single from the album, ‘Tropic Morning News’, The National has been dominating the charts, with the song reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart – their first song to reach that peak since 2017. They’ve also partnered with New Order on a limited-edition t-shirt, with proceeds going to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
First Two Pages of Frankenstein was produced by The National themselves at Long Pond Studios in upstate New York and features guest appearances from the likes of Taylor Swift and Sufjan Stevens. With their incredible track record and penchant for tackling important issues, there’s no doubt that The National’s latest album will be a massive success.
