On the earliest missions to space, astronauts like Buzz Aldrin were more focused on making it back home in one piece than they were on making memories. It wasn’t until later missions, especially the lunar Apollo missions, that NASA fully embraced photography.
Thanks largely in part to dedicated astronauts wanting to take a lens on the greatest trips ever conceived, NASA was soon employing a first chief of photography in Richard Underwood. Soon, every astronaut was being handed a Hasselblad camera and taught the basics of film, exposure and framing.
The astronauts on the Apollo missions weren’t just masters of science and aeronautics, each of them were masters of photography.
