I first stumbled upon the vocal wonders of Chloe Katerndahl a couple of years ago through a video her and her friends made entitled YOUTH. It comes across like such a perfect, homemade snapshot of what we’d all like YOUTH to be, that I was a little dubious at first as to whether it was some secret publicity work from Urban Outfitters or American Apparell. It wasn’t.
Turns out, I shouldn’t be so cynical! The video was just an awesome little project from a bunch of kids in LA who filmed themselves hanging out, skating, climbing trees, and partaking in various other Californian activities.
Chloe Kat: this girl knows what she’s doing. Mixing Californian rhythm with Tennessee swagger, listen to her perform on top a hill for Song Guerrillas.
Anyway, Chloe Kat was one of the kids in that video. Fast forward a few years and she’s all grown up (sorta), and a full time singer-songwriter who is now living and creating out of Nashville, Tennessee. She’s the real deal, too. Her songwriting is absolutely on point, her vocals are raspy, strong and yet still feminine (just not the dainty kind).
With a mish-mash of bluesy influences from Billie Holiday to Jim Morrison, its no surprise. She bashes her guitar Coco around like an absolute pro, and skates when she’s not playing.
Its astounding to me that this girl isn’t more widely known. Anyway, hopefully this vid can provide your first taste of Chloe’s tunes. Actually, looks like Song Guerrillas beat me to it. They filmed the vid you’re about to watch to “help introduce you to amazing artists and musicians. We aim to find underrepresented artists and give them a platform.”
There you go, I’m not the only one who thinks Chloe Kat is underrepresented! Czech it and get back to me. If you like what you hear, she’s got a massive list of uploads on her Soundcloud page.
